Is Ireland's recycling infrastructure sufficient to its needs?

Is Your Company Obligated?

A Producer is an individual who for the purposes of trade or otherwise in the course of business, sells or otherwise supplies to other persons packaging material, packaging or packaged products (source: Waste Management (Packaging) Regulations 2003: Statutory Instrument S.I. 63 of 2003).
More onerous obligations are placed on Major Producers, i.e. companies

with an Annual Turnover greater than €1 million
&
who supply greater than 25 tonnes of packaging onto the Irish market per calendar year

If you are a Major Producer you are obligated to comply with the Waste Packaging (Regulation) 2003. To comply you can either join Repak or choose Self- Compliance

The following responsibilities apply to all producers:

  • Segregate back door waste and ensure specific materials – paper, plastic, aluminium, steel and composites, are made available to a licensed recovery operator for recycling and NOT send to landfill for disposal.

Non-Irish Companies
Companies that are not registered in the Republic of Ireland are currently not required by Irish law to comply with the Waste Management (Packaging) Regulations 2003. Instead, the importer of the packaging/packaged products is the responsible party to whom the Regulations apply. Importers who are Repak Members may however ask their suppliers to take up or contribute to some of the associated costs and join Repak. This is a buyer/supplier decision in which Repak plays no part.
