The Repak Green Christmas campaign has been running for the last eight years in a bid to recover and recycle the 30% of packaging Ireland consumes over the festive season.

According to research undertaken by Repak, each household will generate around 54 kilos or 80,000 tonnes of used packaging in total over the Christmas period. With kerbside collection schemes and various opening hours at recycling centres, householders will have plenty of opportunities to recycle this extra packaging.

In 2007 Repak worked with 34 Local Authorities and supported the promotion of over 90 Green Christmas recycling centres, which were open to the public. Last year Repak recycled nearly 35,000 tonnes of used packaging, which was 10% up on the previous year.

This year the theme of Repak’s Green Christmas Recycling campaign is ‘Clean and Green’. Repak is calling on householders to take care when recycling and to ensure the materials they are putting into their recycling bins is of good quality. To help with this, Repak has compiled a ‘hints & tips’ list so recyclers know what to do with each different type of packaging material and how to recycle it correctly.

Repak is aiming to collect and recycle 45% of this used packaging, generated over the holiday period. This is equivalent to 24 kilos per household or 35,000 tonnes in total of used packaging.

Repak Green Christmas will be supported by a nationwide radio advertising campaign and a national PR campaign.
